FHRA Finals
30.8.-1.9.2002, Alastaro, Finland

HVWS Drag Challenge meets big boys..

After succesful Kiikala weekend HVWS (our virtual VW community) posse were determined to try again as soon as possible. Alhoracing suggested that if we are going to do it, why not doing it at highest level possible in Finland. FHRA would have their Finnish Championship Finals in Alastaro and there would be Street Bracket class, which would suit us. Juha Manninen from Arabia Slugs and me plus Alhoracing from Luftsick decided to go.

There is bit of a interest conflict in bracket racing for me. If the idea in bracket is to get as close to your dial-in as possible, my idea was to get as many attempts as possible and as fast as possible. This kind of racing would be interesting when I would have more practice and know what the car and me are capable of.

The red Galaxie ('64?) was one of my favourite cars.

Juha Manninen's crowd pleasing VW Powered 356B looking business with those Centerlines. I was hoping similar appearance and better ETs to my car after borrowing Saco-wheels and MH street slicks from Jyrki's '55. Unfortunately my lug nuts didn't have long enough threads (since Sacos were thinner) to tighten the wheels so I had to use the 5-spokes in front.

Other interesting looking Euro cars.. The black Volvo PV flipped during their first run, luckily nobody wasn't hurt.

The only VW powered entry (=only real VW entry) besides us was Henry Forsgren with his fast and beautiful SST Beetle.

"Dear diary section.."
I had some trouble fitting the wheels in Saturday morning, so I went late in inspection and missed the first round of qualification. I managed to get 14.7 in the second round, in third round my engine died before staging (don't know why but I guess I was to nervous to switch the fuel pump). In fourth round I made a 14.5 ET which wasn't too bad, Juha made 14.4 with the 356.

Every participant in Street Bracket class were let to race, so I would get at least one another attempt to get in 13s. Juha and I were a second pair in first round we agreed to put same dial-in time, 13.99, which was our target for the weekend. We thought that if we go faster we achive the target, if not at least another one of us will proceed to next round. I went faster (13.93) than my dial-in but Juha got red light, so I made to second round.

In second round my opponent was a Toyota Corolla which for some reason wasn't able to reach the default dial-in time (14.50), so with solid pass (repeating the earlier one) I would have been able to beat him, it was starting to look that I would have chance in the bracket race. I was impatient like horny bastard on Friday night and got red light and ran too fast. I got a feeling that the run was pretty good, the cross wind caught me in the end and I got bit scared and lifted the pedal, the speed was only 147 km/h (some 5 km/h slower than my best), but my ET was 13.746.

After all it turned out to be a good weekend, I made two 13 second passes, drove to Alastaro from Helsinki and back without any problems.

Thanks:
Jyrki & Takis & Kurre & Alhoracing from Luftsick, Juha & Mika from Arabia Slugs, Jussi Jyränkö from Kuplapaja
