Burnout Party
25.8.2002, Air field, Kiikala, Finland

Yeah, this is it.. The HVWS task force is in the area. All cars were driven to the event (just an hour away from home), except the '58 of Slugs Drag Kurko team which was finished bit too late to get all of the details (like cooling) in place. Besides maybe the Supa Flow heads aren't the best choice for highway driving.

It would have easily possible to double the number of participants if there had been more pressure and discussion about the event in HVWS forum.

The only aircooled VW/Porsche participant except us was the red buggy seen in background, which went 13.9. The Pro/Tourist participants on the right.

Since our engines are pretty much evenly matched Juha Manninen's '62 356's 14.7 ET from Alastaro couple of weeks ago was my target. Juha was able to cut his ET to 14.5 range.

My spiritual father, Alhoracing, got his '61 together for the weekend. New 1776cc engine and Gas Burners are updates for the season.

Juse's BBQ chief Jaska arrived with his museum registered 912 (which is for sale, BTW, if interested email me). Slugs' Drag Kurko '58 was the biggest surprise with 14.0 ET.

Jyrki Laune was the fastest VW with 13.4 ET, Juse Marimo managed to get his personal best with his 1776 so far, that being 15.0.

Alhoracing was able to get 13.8 ET even though the first smoke out of muffler appeared a day before on Thursday-Friday night..

This was my first attempt on the quarter mile. I wasn't there to win anything, just trying to get as many and as good runs as possible. I have never been huge drag racing fan, but seeing own mistakes and improvements was interesting. I missed the 3rd gear on first two runs and lifted accelerator pedal too early on the first one.

The good old IF-factor, I got four runs; 15.4, 15.1, 14.7 and 14.345. The best time was after removing fan belt and air filters, lowered pressure in rear tyres and shifted higher at 7000. My best 60 foot time was 2.002 and the 60 footer in best run was 2.2. So IF I had gotten my shit together low 14-second in street trim would have been possible. Or IF I had slicks, removed un-necessary weight like bumpers, rear and passenger seat, 13-second barrier would have been reachable (Wilho, how the hell did you know that half a year ago?).

Thanks Jyrki for loaning those 5-spokes for this summer!

Since there was six cars in our group it was easy to figure out natural pairs for the classification runs, Arabia Slugs raced among themselves (Kurko vs. Juha), Luftsick 1776 Challenge (Alhoracing vs Jyrki) and me raced against Juse.
