Jyrki bought this Oval as an unfinished project from Sweden late in 1998. The colour is quite exceptional,
being Jungle Green which is a '55 model year only. Jyrki's Oval was registered in Finland with 1200cc engine few
weeks after purchase.
The Oval made it's first public appearance in Finnish VW Scene in April of '99 when it was displayed in WCA's department in American Car Show and couple of weeks later in Luftsick's dept in Euro Car Show. Jyrki visited many shows both in Sweden and Finland during last summer with the car. Centerline wheels were supplied by BUGPAJA. Tires have the classic skinny front and fat in the back combination. Front beam has the usual sway-a-ways fitted and the rear has been lovered by turning the torsion bars. The engine is a 1776cc unit which Jyrki has built himself. That displacement is achieved with 69 mm counter weight crank and 90.5mm Cima/Mahle piston and cylinder set. Connecting rods are stock. The cylinder heads were bought from Keiteleen Kone and were ported and polished by Hannu Luoto, the tripple sprung valves are 40mm intake and 36mm for exhaust. Exhaust consists of 1 5/8" header and 2" muffler. Type I oil-cooler has been substituted by Type IV cooler. Compression ratio is 9.0:1. For camshaft Jyrki chose Engle FK-10 with straight cut gears. For carburettors there is only one option for car like this, and that is Weber 48 IDA. Transmission was built by Alhoracing. It has 4.375:1 ring and pinion and 3.78/2.31/1.52/1.09-gear ratios. Super-diff, Folts axles and HD sidecovers have been fitted. Clutch has 2000 lbs Kennedy pressure plate and F&S stock disc. In his first race in VW Open which was held in slippery run-way of Malmi Airfield Jyrki managed to run 1/8 mile in 9.03sec/79kmph (on radials, through muffler, w/o belt). During the season car was spanked through 1/4 mile as well and 13.878sec/151.90kmph ET was achieved.
